, 1965

wood, 190 × 195 × 55 cm

Always interested in the values of matter, Spagnulo, since the end of the 1960s, has combined this requirement with the geometric rigor of his compositions. Far from the rigorisms of American Minimalism, the artist has always introduced irregularity into the fully self-referential structure of sculpture: the material with its morphologies, and also the gesture, the crack, everything that could trace back to an organic phenomenology. The artist says: “Working with clay and wood made me understand that I had to look for an essential relationship with the material: not to manipulate it with skill, not to transform it, but to let out all its autonomous energy and formal power. The material itself is the sculpture".
