I Tre Onfali del 1967 sono una delle rare prove di Novelli scultore, e dimostrano l’altrettanto ampia liberta con cui l’artista si avvicinava allo specifico scultoreo: vetro colorato e piombo, marmo dipinto e intarsiato, e, in questo caso, resine. Materie artificiali che creano un complesso plastico anch’esso non canonico, tre semplici solidi geometrici senz’altro modellato che la curvatura delle superfici. Il loro corpo liscio diventa supporto per la definizione di segni lineari, scattanti, sottili, che contriobuisvono a dare all’opera un sapore arcaico, quasi totemico.

L’oriente risplende di rosso, 1967

Dipinta nel fatidico 1968, la grande tela di Novelli richiama nel titolo i dibattiti ideologici che in quegli anni infiammavano l’attività culturale nel nostro e in molti altri paesi occidentali. Novelli non fece mai mistero delle sue simpatie politiche, che come si vede ispiravano le sue composizioni ma che ovviamente valgono come mero elemento ispiratore. L’elaborazione del dipinto non ha niente a che vedere con quella del manifesto politico, la poetica di Novelli si basa sulla piu totale libertà di impaginazione, di segni, parole, lacerti di immagine, inserti cromatici, con l’unica costante di un profondo lirismo. L’oriente dunque risplende di rosso, perchè la superficie della tela ci mostra una fitta pioggia che sembra stia per ricoprirla interamente. Insieme a chiazze biancastre, la superficie reca per gran parte una tessitura di punti rossi, da alcuni dei quali cola materia pittorica, che sembrano calare verso il basso o, seguendo le indicazioni del titolo, disegnare un firmamento infiammato.

Nel 1960 Achille Perilli e Fabio Mauri interpellano i loro amici artisti sul tema Morte della pittura? per l’“Almanacco Letterario Bompiani”. Nella sua risposta, Gastone Novelli interpreta questa provocazione nei termini di una “morte della forma e non della pittura che anzi penso stia assumendo in questi tempi la fisionomia di un linguaggio nuovo, più complesso e più umano. È come quando una lingua cambia per l’arricchimento del suo alfabeto. Se oggi è possibile trovare in certa pittura un nuovo modo di racconto e distinguerla quindi dalla pittura di immagine tradizionale (Rothko, Burri, Tàpies, etc.) questo è certamente un segno di vitalità”.
