Entering the Labyrinth of Arnaldo Pomodoro you will immerse yourself in a timeless work that evokes past worlds and vanished civilizations and where the biographical and artistic stages of the sculptor re-emerge through an experience in which introspection and art go hand in hand. A magical and mysterious journey in the mind of the Master, between reworkings of sculptures already known and forms still in the making.

Accompanied by a guide of the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, we enter the sculptor’s studio to visit the exhibition Open Studio#1. L’inizio del tempo. Le ricerche spazialiste di Arnaldo Pomodoro, the first appointment in a new annual cycle of temporary installations that tell and explore little-known themes and periods of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s artistic research, exhibiting original works, documents and archival materials.The exhibition brings together a group of sculptures, drawings and design studies, some of which on loan from the CSAC of Parma, from the period of activity 1957-1964, an important moment of research of poetic synthesis between the investigations on sign-writing and sign-matter .
The visit ends in the Project Room, where curators and artists under 40 are invited to give their personal interpretation of the issues addressed in the Open Studio setup. The Foundation thus intends to create a direct link between its historical investigation activities and those on the most recent developments in the contemporary art scene.

Manipulation workshop in Arnaldo Pomodoro Studio
Entering the labyrinthine spaces of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s studio, manipulating the clay by impressing those same signs to create one’s own sculpture, is not child’s play … The negative working technique with which Arnaldo Pomodoro creates his sculptures is typical of sculpture visionary nature of the artist, who imprints the abstract signs of his “writing” on a clay surface, already imagining the final form. A matrix is created from the clay in which the plaster is poured, which then left to dry becomes a small bas-relief.

We will work in Arnaldo Pomodoro’s studio to design and compose our relief print using the press. You just have to autograph it! … Like sculpture, the graphic work of an artist like Arnaldo Pomodoro is expressed through signs and traces printed in the negative into the material, then transferred in the positive onto the paper by means of a printing process that uses considerable pressure to obtain effects similar to those achieved in cast metal bas-reliefs. The fragile sheet thus takes on sculptural connotations and offers the starting point for a laboratory activity that proposes to try their hand at the design and composition of a relief matrix assembled with recycled objects of minute thickness, cantilevered shapes able to transfer on the support their imprint thanks to the pressure exerted by the press.

Guided tour of the De Andreis artistic foundry where Arnaldo Pomodoro gives life to his works. Lost wax casting is a technique with ancient roots; born in the Bronze Age, it reached its peak in the sixteenth century, as used by Benvenuto Cellini in the “Treatise on sculpture”. Like many other contemporary sculptors, Arnaldo Pomodoro still follows this procedure to create his works. But what exactly does it consist of? To discover this and other secrets, the only way is to observe it with your own eyes, where it is still practiced.
