Inside Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Labyrinth
curated by Francesca Valente

As part of the collaboration between Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation and Fondazione Progetti Beverly Pepper for the 2021 Festival delle Arti, and within the framework of the Todi Festival, the exhibition Labyr-Into. Inside Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Labyrinth opens in Todi on 28 August, curated by Francesca Valente.

The multimedia exhibition, set up in the evocative venue of the Sala delle Pietre of Palazzo del Popolo, is a tribute to Ingresso nel Labirinto (1995-2011), one of the most fascinating and enigmatic works by Arnaldo Pomodoro, an environmental installation of about 170 square meters located in the basement of the former Riva Calzoni steelworks in Milan.

“The Labyrinth is – as Arnaldo Pomodoro writes – a reflection on all my work: the gesture of reappropriation and recovery of an artistic activity that has spanned the decades of my life and constitutes a sort of synthesis”.

Through two Gear VR workstations, visitors can virtually enter the work which, thanks to immersive technology, extends into the space and time of the Sala delle Pietre, in a multisensory experience of great involvement and suggestion. A real digital environment designed by Oliver Pavicevic and Steve Piccolo, who reconstructed the environments in virtual reality using innovative holophonic and photometric scanning technologies. The Sala delle Pietre will also host some material presences: the bronze model that reproduces all the rooms of the work to scale and the large Osso di seppia (cuttlefish bone) in fiberglass, the model of one of the elements of the environment. The exhibition is completed by the photographs taken by Dario Tettamanzi and the evocative video of the performance O Labirinto (2011) with the verses specially composed by Aldo Nove and recited by Federica Fracassi (directed by Piergiorgio Gay, produced by Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Milan).

The vernissage will be preceded, at 5 pm in the Sala del Consiglio, by an Art Talk by the curator Francesca Valente in conversation with Bruno Corà, Fondazione Burri (Città di Castello), Marco Tonelli, Palazzo Collicola (Spoleto) and Federico Giani, Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro (Milan). On this occasion the exhibition catalog will be presented and distributed.
