1961. Tempo di Continuità
Curated by Flaminio Gualdoni
September 24 - December 19, 2014
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Vigevano 9, Milano
In 1961, a series of exhibitions introduces the national and international scene to the 'Continuità' group, which benefits from an important critical framework by Giulio Carlo Argan and the active involvement of Guido Ballo. United around the innovative genius of Lucio Fontana, from whose Spatialism manifesto the group adopts the evocative statement "Art is not eternal; when man ends, the infinite continues," some of the best representatives of the movement opposing the emphasis on the informal in favor of a clearer, non-objective reasoning share an intense common path. The group does not unite around a theoretical or programmatic manifesto, as was common at the time, but rather forms an aggregation of qualitatively eminent and authoritative personalities at the moment of their first full maturity.
The exhibition, curated by Flaminio Gualdoni with the collaboration of Federico Giani, documents with highly significant works the presence of all the artists who took part in the group's events: Franco Bemporad, Piero Dorazio, Lucio Fontana, Gastone Novelli, Achille Perilli, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Gio' Pomodoro, and Giulio Turcato, as well as Arturo Carmassi, Pietro Consagra, Sergio Dangelo, Mattia Moreni, Ettore Sottsass, and Tancredi.
Accompanying the exhibition is the fourth issue of the Quaderni, featuring a critical essay by Flaminio Gualdoni, images of the exhibited works, and extensive documentation related to the experience of the "Continuità" group.
