Magdalena Abakanowicz. Space to Experience
curated by Angela Vattese
April 10 - June 26 2009
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Solari 35, Milano
The solo exhibition of Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930, Falenty), curated by Angela Vettese, brings together a selected group of large-scale works created over fifty years by the Polish artist, showcasing her versatility in the use of materials – corten steel, bronze, aluminum, rope, yarns, and tangles of jute fabrics – and in depicting the human condition.
Independent of any tradition, it is very difficult—if not impossible—to classify Magdalena Abakanowicz’s work within a single expressive movement. Her artistic research nonetheless shows points of contact with the intentional anti-form tendency and has timely addressed themes of femininity and eroticism. Throughout her career, she has operated in complete freedom from rules. What remains constant in every phase of her creative process are the exhibitions, conceived as spaces of experience and places where a synthesis of fears, delights, wonders, protections, solitude, and other fundamental emotions can emerge—just as in the succession of events in human existence.
Space to experience, a term dear to her—which gives the exhibition its title—refers to spaces to be experienced with all the senses. For Magdalena Abakanowicz, the work is the exhibition as a whole, an installation made using various techniques but aimed at creating an atmosphere of general unease, a sense of wonder for life, and at the same time the inextricable difficulty of living.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by the Foundation.
