Arnaldo Pomodoro. Il teatro scolpito
curated by Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, with the collaboration of Studio Copernico
September 28 - April 25, 2012
Palazzo Reale, Piazzetta Reale 1, Torino
The Royal Palace of Turin hosts Arnaldo Pomodoro. The Sculpted Theatre, promoted and organized by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation and Studio Copernico in Milan, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate for Cultural and Landscape Heritage of Piedmont, with the patronage of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage, the Region of Piedmont, the City of Turin, and the Municipality of Milan.
The exhibition tells an extraordinary and unique journey, through which it is possible to revisit the research work for scenic design carried out by Arnaldo Pomodoro over a span of fifty years for more than forty performances: from Greek tragedy to melodrama, from contemporary theater to music, through sculptures, models, sketches, and drawings, as well as costumes and stage objects. It ranges from Kleist’s Catherine of Heilbronn, on Lake Zurich in 1972, directed by Luca Ronconi, to Emilio Isgrò's trilogy of Orestea by Aeschylus on the ruins of Gibellina, staged between 1983 and 1985, directed by Filippo Crivelli, to the diptych Cavalleria Rusticana by Mascagni and Šárka by Janáček at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 2009, directed by Ermanno Olmi.
The exhibition is complemented by an outdoor display of several monumental sculptures originally conceived for major performances: the four Forms of Myth for the Orestea cycle, the Grand Portal for Oedipus Rex, and the Obelisk for The Passion of Cleopatra.
The theatrical experience – says Arnaldo Pomodoro – has opened new horizons for me and has encouraged and even inspired me to experiment with new approaches and ideas for large-scale sculptures, because theater gives me a sense of creative freedom: it feels as though I can materialize visionary concepts. Arnaldo Pomodoro's scenic works possess their own linguistic autonomy, enduring over time and, most importantly, revealing to the artist new expressive developments and new contexts. As he himself writes: the theatrical experience, which I embrace with enthusiasm, has also placed me in a new perspective in relation to the architects I work with and to the environment of urban life.
On the occasion of the exhibition, a volume of over 600 pages curated by Antonio Calbi is published, co-published by the Foundation and Feltrinelli, featuring numerous writings and a large number of images documenting all the 44 scenic projects realized by the artist from 1972 to the present.
