Arnaldo Pomodoro
1955-65

April 12 - June 13, 2019
Tornabuoni Art, Passage de Retz, 9 rue Charlot, Parigi

Tornabuoni Art Paris presents an exhibition, organized in close collaboration with the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation, which documents the origins of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s work – the years 1955-1965, a fundamental period in the artist's production – featuring exclusive archival materials and works never exhibited before.

In the exhibition, for the first time together, will be displayed some of the most representative works from the 1955-1960 period: these are the bas-reliefs in silver, lead, and bronze, composed with a dense series of light and rhythmic marks, a trace of knots, points, and threads, like a sort of archaic and illegible writing. I worked on velvet backgrounds – says Pomodoro – which I would fade with bleach, with acid tricks, with iron powder, mixing it and gluing it onto boards, onto concrete planes, somewhat like Klee, who worked with a weave of gauze, papers, and watercolors. Next to these, the most significant works marking the transition to the third dimension of the 1960s: The Wheel, The Cube, and the first sphere, Sphere No. 1; up to some of his more recent works, created between the late 1970s and 2010: the series of Heavenly Stakes, Steles, and Continuum.

The exhibition is accompanied by a monographic publication edited by Luca Massimo Barbero, which offers a new interpretation of Pomodoro's work, through an in-depth historical and critical investigation of the 1955-1965 decade, and a rich iconographic apparatus of documents and archival materials, made available by the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation.
