Arnaldo Pomodoro
{sur}face
curated by Lorenzo Respi
October 17, 2020 - July 11, 2021
Castello Campori, Piazza Fratelli Sassi 2, Soliera (MO)
The Castello Campori, a historical and architectural symbol of the City of Soliera (Modena), reaffirms its commitment to contemporary art with the exhibition Arnaldo Pomodoro. {sur}face. Organized in collaboration with the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation and curated by Lorenzo Respi, a member of the Foundation's Scientific Committee, the exhibition tells the story of the visionary artist whose work profoundly shaped the second half of 20th-century Italy.
The title of the exhibition originates from a wordplay between the term "superficie" (surface) and "volto" (face), highlighting its double layer of interpretation. The aim of the project, divided into two parts across seven exhibition rooms, is to tell an unprecedented aspect of Arnaldo Pomodoro’s art: the man before the work. The journey explores his theatrical experiences from the 1950s, a place of research and great creative freedom, passing through the Obelisk and the sculptures of the 2000s, up to the bronze model of the environmental work Ingresso nel labirinto (1995-2011), which, as the artist writes, is “a reflection on all my work: the act of reclaiming and recovering an artistic activity that has spanned the decades of my life and constitutes a sort of synthesis.” Through two Gear VR stations, visitors will be able to enter the Labyrinth in a highly immersive and evocative multisensory virtual reality experience.
On the occasion of the exhibition, in the square in front of the Castle, the monumental work Obelisco per Cleopatra (1989-2008) will be installed. This piece, granted on loan by the Foundation, will be an integral part of the urban context for the next three years. Additionally, in the council hall of the Municipality of Soliera, coinciding with the exhibition, the work Open Up Arnaldo (2007) by Emilio Isgrò will also be displayed. This piece has also been granted a three-year loan from the Foundation.
The end date of the exhibition, initially set for January 10, 2021, has been extended to July 11, 2021.
