Cristina Iglesias. Il senso dello spazio
curated by Gloria Moure
September 29, 2009 - March 21, 2010
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Solari 35, Milano
The exhibition, curated by Gloria Moure, presents a series of nineteen works tracing the recent production of Cristina Iglesias (San Sebastián, 1956), one of the most original voices in international contemporary sculpture, and the artist’s first solo show in Italy at the Foundation. The exhibition – featuring works from the artist’s collection as well as public and private collections such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Fundacion la Caixa in Barcelona, and the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York – is structured like a vast labyrinth, inviting the viewer to embark on a journey through Iglesias’ sculptures and spaces, provoking reflection on the sculptural conception of artists of her generation.
The themes addressed by the artist – states Angela Vettese, Director of the Foundation – are manifold and overlapping. Among these are the role of nature in our lives; nature’s capacity to still inspire reflection among artists; the use of techniques and materials that blend the ancient tradition of molding and casting with materials such as resin, braided steel cable, exposed concrete, glass, and alabaster. Central is the idea of Arcadia as a mythical meeting place, never fully attainable, between man and nature, and thus between the natural and the artificial. The spaces conceived by Cristina Iglesias lie entirely within these two poles: nature is evoked through patterns of old wallpapers or, more often, through the reconstruction of vegetal patterns, mixtures of various essences, whose casts become the basis for an entire corridor.
Accompanying the exhibition are two publications: a catalogue published by the Foundation, documenting the exhibition’s design and installation with photographs and texts by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Aldo Nove, Gloria Moure, and Angela Vettese; and a monograph published by the Foundation and Ediciones Polígrafa, featuring a dialogue between Cristina Iglesias and Gloria Moure, along with contributions by Gabriele Basilico and Patricia Falguières.
