Arnaldo Pomodoro
Oedipus costume for Oedipus Rex by Igor Stravinsky, 1988

fabric and patinated fiberglass, approximately 230 × 80 × 80 cm

With respect to the stage costumes designed for the staging of Igor Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex – in Siena, in Piazza Jacopo della Quercia, on 19 August 1988 – Arnaldo Pomodoro declared that he was inspired by the theme of the scarab: “The overall factor is that of the scarab, with its characteristic sacral value among the ancients (and the Egyptians in particular): it has light armour, like the human one, while it is very fragile internally. The armor (as some psychoanalysts also call it) is lost in crisis and confusion."
