Project Room #15
Pamela Diamante
Stato di flusso
curated by Chiara Pirozzi and Alessandra Troncone
March 18 - June 24, 2022
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Vigevano 9, Milano
State of Flow, an unpublished project by Pamela Diamante (Bari, 1985), is the first event of the new exhibition cycle of Project Room, the Foundation’s “observatory” project dedicated to the most recent developments in the international art scene, curated for 2022 by curators Chiara Pirozzi and Alessandra Troncone.
State of Flow is a highly immersive environmental installation with a strong perceptual impact, the result of a relational process initiated by the artist with a group of people invited to engage in a self-analysis and reflection on their existential condition. Supported by professionals in the fields of theater and psychoanalysis, Diamante created 6 videos in which the individuals involved are stationary, lying down, and with their eyes closed, performing the most vital action possible: breathing.
Suspended in an undefined time and space, these video portraits, poised between stillness and movement, are scattered throughout the space of the installation, inviting viewers to both look and listen. They engage the audience in a minimal yet powerful action, capable of encapsulating the essence of vital energy, also represented by the photographic image of the Dancing Maenad by Skopas, which for the artist is the trans-historical symbol of vital energy, an archetype of ecstasy and frenzy.
The visual imagery proposed by Pamela Diamante creates a suspended place, inhabited by equally suspended identities, where time does not flow in a linear fashion but returns in a circular form. Here, we encounter time capsules from which the portraits of the “sleeping” seem to emerge, leaving the doubt as to whether we are facing individuals from the past or presences from the future.
On the occasion of the exhibition, a booklet is published with a critical text by Chiara Pirozzi and Alessandra Troncone, and a conversation between Pamela Diamante and Imma d'Errico (Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist).
