Project Room #2

Maria Teresa Ortoleva
Triumphus Visionis

curated by Federico Giani
September 21 - October 14, 2016
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Vigevano 9, Milano

For the second appointment of the new Project Room cycle, curated by Federico Giani, the Foundation presents Triumphus Visionis by Maria Teresa Ortoleva (1990), open to the public from September 21 to October 13, a new version of the work originally installed by the Milanese artist in 2015 on the grand staircase of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and presented at the Vatican Pavilion during Expo 2015.

Painter by training – says Giani – Ortoleva explores the relationship between the dynamics of vision and imagination, developing research that freely draws from the most diverse fields of the humanistic and scientific cultures. Her way of intervening in space is realized in installations with primary sculptural value, environmental situations capable of guiding the viewer's gaze and action, making them participants in the creative process of the work.

The heart of Triumphus Visionis is a digital print on chiffon approximately 10 meters long, the result of a process of layering and selecting images, developed through a careful examination of archives, digital databases, and search engines, as well as a study of the history of bestiaries, diagrammatic representations, and graphic forms of imaginative thinking. Compared to the 2015 version, Ortoleva now places greater emphasis on interaction with the viewer by placing mirrors, platforms, and seating beneath the chiffon, inviting visitors to determine their own way of experiencing the work through an active viewing dynamic.
The materials, drawings, and notes that form the subtext of Triumphus Visionis, presented here for the first time, will also allow the installation to be explored from an analytical perspective.

On October 15 (the 12th Contemporary Art Day promoted by AMACI – the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums) on the occasion of the finissage of Triumphus Visionis, the Foundation invites all visitors, both young and old, to take part in a workshop led by the artist.
