Premio Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro. International Competition for Young Sculptors. 1st edition

Curated by the International Jury of the Prize
May 19 – July 28, 2006
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Solari 35, Milano

On May 18, 2006, the exhibition of selected works for the first edition of the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation Prize was inaugurated, dedicated to artists under the age of 40. Established at the will of Arnaldo Pomodoro, the Prize aims to promote the creativity of young artists internationally and offer them a platform for expression.

The nearly 600 applications received from around the world are an unmistakable sign of the enormous attention this initiative has garnered. At the same time, the wide participation and the quality of the proposals highlight the great vitality that sculpture enjoys today, interpreted here in all its forms: from large-scale installations to small works inspired by the art of jewelry making, from sculptures designed for the plein air, as spaces for gathering and citizenship, to pieces meant to be physically experienced, some of which even blur the lines between architecture and land art.

The works were selected by an International Jury composed of Kosme de Barañano (Spain), Sokari Douglas Camp (Nigeria/U.K.), Susan Ferleger Brades (U.K.), Tom Freudenheim (U.S.A.), Hou Hanru (China/France), Arturo Carlo Quintavalle (Italy), and Arnaldo Pomodoro himself.

The jury selected the twenty-five artists who will be present at the exhibition. They are: Davide Benelli (ITALY); Douglas Burton (U.K.); Carlotta Carzaniga (ITALY); Gianluca Codeghini (ITALY); Jenny Dowd (U.S.A.); Hong Eu-Young (KOREA); Alex Jacobs (NETHERLANDS); Ladislav Jezbera (CZECH REPUBLIC, with the support of Bachl); Sean Lynch (IRELAND); Alberto Mariani (ITALY); Glória Mendes (PORTUGAL); Rimantas Milkintas (LITHUANIA); Claire Morgan (U.K., with the support of Arts Council England); Simone Racheli (ITALY); Piet Reekers (NETHERLANDS); Laura Renna (ITALY); Johanna Rille (AUSTRIA); Nordine Sajot (FRANCE/ITALY); Barbara Salvucci (ITALY); Gian Paolo Striano (ITALY); Giovanni Termini (ITALY); Liesbeth Touw (NETHERLANDS); Cristina Treppo (ITALY); Stefan Wischnewski (GERMANY); Yeo Chee Kiong (SINGAPORE, with the support of National Arts Council Singapore).

The winners of the Prize will be announced on May 18 during the inauguration of the exhibition. On the same day, the winner of the Costa Crociere S.p.A. Special Prize, sponsor of the exhibition, will also be announced. Costa Crociere thus intends to strengthen its role as a modern patron, committed to promoting various contemporary cultural and artistic expressions.

Accompanying the exhibition is a catalog published by the Foundation, with texts by the members of the Jury and presentation materials on the twenty-five finalists.
