Dalì e Rauschenberg. L’Inferno di Dante
curated by Lorenzo Respi, with the collaboration of Mjras
April 7 - July 17, 2011
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Solari 35, Milano
The exhibition, curated by Lorenzo Respi in collaboration with Mjras, presents a comparison between 34 screenprints by Robert Rauschenberg (1958-1960) and 34 color woodcuts by Salvador Dalí (1960), offering a reinterpretation of Dante's Inferno.
The works of the two artists focus on the first canto of the Divine Comedy, characterized by its gruesome and terrifying descriptions, populated by the damned and demons, historical figures and mythological creatures, ancient leaders and servants of faith, poets and philosophers, all condemned to suffering in the painful abyss of circles and rings, cliffs and precipices, rivers and waterfalls.
Within the exhibition path, a large book is installed, onto which images and words of famous actors and literary figures (Giorgio Albertazzi, Carmelo Bene, Roberto Benigni, Vittorio Gassman, Vittorio Sermonti) are projected, taking turns in reading Canto V of the Inferno, in which a book itself becomes the protagonist of the events involving the two famous lovers, Paolo and Francesca.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication published by the Foundation, featuring an experimental text co-written by Aldo Nove and Lorenzo Respi.
