Perino & Vele. Luoghi comuni

curated by Lorenzo Respi
April 7 - July 17, 2011
Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Via Solari 35, Milano

The Foundation presents a retrospective exhibition of Perino & Vele, a duo formed in 1994 and composed of Emiliano Perino (New York, 1973) and Luca Vele (Rotondi, Avellino, 1975), curated by Lorenzo Respi. The exhibition, titled Luoghi comuni ("Commonplaces"), retraces 17 years of their career through 25 large-scale works, developed around a thematic approach that critiques, with both clarity and irony, corruption, violence, and social stagnation.

Through their original use of papier-mâché, Perino & Vele shape forms that allude to news events, themes of social and political criticism, and the distortion of reality by the mass media. Everyday objects (duffel bags, strollers, armchairs), road signs (signposts, barricades, poles), and animals (pigs, camels, bats) become a pretext to draw the viewer’s attention to issues that are often silenced or deliberately forgotten, such as massacres, or violence against humans and animals.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the short film Video su Carta by Antonello Matarazzo will be produced.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog published by the Foundation, with texts by Lorenzo Respi and Pino Corrias.
