Sculpture workshop

La colata di gesso

Make a plaster cast in Arnaldo Pomodoro's studio /Via Vigevano 3, Milano

we investigate the "negative" process used by Arnaldo Pomodoro to create his sculptures. Then we enter his laboratory to experience this technique firsthand. We manipulate the clay until it becomes a surface on which to imprint the abstract signs typical of his work with various tools and instruments. We mix water and plaster and pour the mixture into our clay mold. While we wait for the plaster to dry, let's explore the characteristics of the materials used by the sculptor. Finally, we unmold our plaster bas-relief and notice that the negative signs in clay have become positive plaster reliefs! How much magic in the transformation of sign and matter!
